I was out riding my bike today, which first off was not a choice, my car is broke, but then I remembered how much fun it is and that it only takes fifteen minutes to get from my house to campus so what then is the point of having a car? so I was riding. and as I rode, I saw a man, who looked to be in his late 60's to early 70's bent over set down on his front steps. He wore a white baseball hat and long overalls with a button down shirt underneath. He looked to be about 6' maybe, and big 250 lbs. maybe a little less. He couldn't still be in the work force but I suspect he was working all day in his yard. Work in the lawn is a reminder of responsibility and need. The lawn needs the old man and the old man needs the lawn. Need is something that can be forgotten in old age. Checking my phone for the time, it was around 4:30 and I wondered as he sat leaned over, elbows resting on his knees, is he just dog weary from the day or is it a prayer? I'd like to think that his silent and tired meditation was a prayer perhaps to God perhaps to the lawn, "thanks for the honest work."
